The Difference Between Those Who Find Happiness and Those Who Don't During a Record-Breaking Rainy Spell [35 Consecutive Days of Rain]
I hear Tokyo has hit a record of 35 consecutive days of rain.
This blog is going to keep running for decades to come (haha), so I’m recording this here as a personal note.
There are people who find happiness in this streak of rainy days, and others who find it miserable.
Don't you think a slight shift in mindset can change your life?
In this article, I’d like to share that kind of happiness-oriented mindset.
I am a patent attorney, but I am also a "Senior Psychological Counselor."
I’m here to share insights that blend psychology with fresh ideas!
<Table of Contents>
(1) Tokyo's record-breaking 35-day rainy spell
(2) People who find happiness in the rainy streak
(3) A helpful mindset for those who feel unhappy about the rainy streak
■ (1) Tokyo's record-breaking 35-day rainy spell
✓ 35-day streak of rain (August 27 – September 30)
✓ Surpassed the previous record of 33 days set in 2019 (June 27 – July 29)
✓ Rain was recorded every single day throughout September—a first in recorded history for a full month
Speaking as a Tokyo resident, I certainly have these impressions:
✓ There were many days when carrying an umbrella was a good idea
✓ Frequent sudden downpours in the evening → created a cooling "uchimizu" (sprinkled water) effect
✓ Frequent rain around midnight → allowed for cool, comfortable sleep and the hope of a cooler day ahead
■ (2) People who find happiness in the rainy streak
Many people likely found happiness in this particular rainy spell.
Above all, it was a cool summer.
There were likely fewer cases of heatstroke, which is a very good thing.
Also, adult life is often described as a series of "ordinary days."
But we got to witness a weather record! There is something nice about that touch of the extraordinary.
We see "record-breaking" events in the weather quite often these days. Enjoy a fresh perspective on the weather news!
■ (3) How to cope if the streak of rainy days is getting you down
Some of you might dislike the rain.
If that sounds like you, try keeping the ideas we’ve discussed so far in mind.
You might also want to consider this:
If it hadn't been raining, it would have been hot.
Would you have preferred the heat?
It might be worth changing the habit of focusing only on the negative side of things.
It takes a slight shift in mindset, but simply flipping your perspective on negative news is all it takes!
After all, being able to worry about the weather is actually a luxury.
I’ll leave you with this thought:
"The rain makes the plants happy."
■
There was a huge fuss about a typhoon making its closest approach to the Kanto region on October 1st, yet the Japan Meteorological Agency forecast sunny skies?
What will happen to the consecutive rainy day record? Will a bit of rain after midnight on the 30th extend the streak? (Haha)
I’ll continue to deliver happiness by combining psychology with fresh ideas!
