Practicing Finding Happiness in Negative News [Seismic Intensity 5-Lower in the Tokyo Area]

Around 2:00 AM on Sunday, August 23, an earthquake registering a seismic intensity of "5-Lower" occurred in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

In the past, if you woke up during an event like this, you might have simply forgotten about it later.

These days, however, it gets massive news coverage (haha).

✓ "Don't remind me of it when I had managed to forget."

✓ "Don't broadcast negative news first thing in the morning."

It seems many people felt this way.

Given that there was hardly any damage, those feelings are certainly understandable.

However, we knew the news would cover it extensively.

It’s a waste to let yourself get dragged down by negativity every time!

So, in this article, I’d like to share a way to find happiness in the news.

Mastering this makes it easier to feel happy in your daily life.

■ A Simple Way to Find Happiness in Negative News

✓ Try listing "three" happy things related to the news.

That’s all there is to it.

It isn't just the news; nothing in the world is inherently good or bad.

It all depends on your interpretation.

Regarding this earthquake, for example:

① The number of injured people was in the dozens.

That means 99.9999% of the people living in the Tokyo area didn't get hurt at all.

② While it is unfortunate for those who were injured, let's use this as an opportunity to take precautions.

If the injury was caused by falling objects or tripping, it can serve as a trigger to declutter your home.

It might even save your life in a future disaster.

③ Since it happened late Saturday night, there was minimal impact on the following day.

In fact, because the news reported it, we were able to identify points ① through ③.

■ How about this summer?

Try listing three happy things from your daily life!

I recommend doing this every day (listing more than three is fine, too).

Let's try another exercise: how about this "summer"?

Why not try listing three happy things about it?

① There have been many cool days.

② Even though a "severe heat day" category was officially established, we might end the year without seeing one?

③ Has the year turned into just two seasons? Winter has disappeared from the Tokyo area—has summer vanished, too? (Seeing the words "lingering summer heat" amidst weather that feels more like the rainy season—where did the real summer go?)

Viewed this way, negative news is actually a treasure trove of happiness!
