The theory that "young people who don't want to be managers" have always existed but are simply becoming more visible

We’ve seen an increase in online articles about "young people who don't want to be managers."

✓ It’s a conspiracy to eliminate management roles entirely!

Some people argue this.

After all, a flat organizational structure can sometimes lead to reduced labor costs.

However, whenever I see articles like this, I tend to think:

✓ It’s just that a phenomenon which has always existed is now becoming more visible.

In this article, I’ll delve into both of these perspectives.

This should also serve as a helpful guide when reading such online articles in the future.

<Table of Contents>

(1) The "young people who don't want to be managers" narrative aims to eliminate management roles

(2) Young people who didn't want to be managers have always existed

■ (1) The "young people who don't want to be managers" narrative aims to eliminate management roles

In the past, it was commonly said that managers didn't receive overtime pay.

The situation has changed in recent years due to the internet—and the rise of AI.

People can now easily look up accurate information regarding labor laws.

It turns out that middle managers (specifically those who do not qualify as "managerial/supervisory staff" under labor laws) *are* entitled to overtime pay.

Consequently, some business owners might want to shift to a flat organizational structure without managers.

So, the theory goes, they are trying to encourage more young people to reject the idea of becoming managers...

That is the basis for the conspiracy theory regarding "young people who don't want to be managers."

It’s similar to the conspiracy theories about eliminating full-time permanent employees.

■ (2) Young people who didn't want to be managers have always existed

I certainly understand the point made in (1) above.

However, many recent online articles aren't exactly high-minded journalism.

As long as they attract clicks, anything goes regarding the content.

That said, an article wouldn't work if *nobody* felt that way at all.

So, they likely take a sentiment that has existed for a long time and exaggerate it for the article.

These are often what are known as "kotatsu articles" (low-effort pieces written without leaving one's seat), simply because they are easy to produce. There have always been quite a few young people who have no desire to become managers.

For instance, I myself felt the same way about not wanting a promotion:

✓ I wanted to focus entirely on hands-on, practical work.

✓ I had no interest in taking credit or seeking recognition for achievements.

✓ I didn't care what others thought, even if it meant remaining in a non-managerial role for my entire career.

This tendency is particularly common among technical professionals.

However, does *every* young person today think this way?

The articles that frequently grab headlines often represent the views of a minority.

It is a case of the Pareto Principle (where 20% of opinions account for 80% of the visibility).

Thinking about what other kinds of stories make for popular headlines can be a great mental exercise!
