【都会民には難問】快速の方が各駅停車より時間が掛かるのはなぜ？
頭の体操にこんな問題（水平思考問題）はいかがでしょうか？
都会に住んでいる人には難問かもしれません！

ある路線には、Ａ駅－Ｂ駅－Ｃ駅の３駅があります。
この路線には、各駅停車と快速が走っています。
各駅停車は、Ａ駅からＢ駅に停車して、Ｃ駅に着きます。
快速は、Ａ駅から、Ｂ駅で乗客の乗り降りなく、Ｃ駅に着きます。
ところが、快速の方が各駅停車より時間が掛かります。
なぜでしょうか？

あれ？快速に乗ったのに、不思議な動きをする・・・
そうか！いま向こうの車窓の外は、きっとこうなっているはず・・・
これを題材に水平思考問題を作ってみよう！
こんな非日常を楽しむのはいいですね。頭の活性化になります。
非日常といっても、なにも旅行に行く必要はありません。
いつもと違うちょっとした行動でもいいのです。

（解答）
その路線は単線。
快速はＢ駅で待避線に停車して、反対方向の電車を行かせる。
その待避線にはホームはなく、扉は開かない。
Ｂ駅で客の乗り降りがないことから「快速」としている。
Ｂ駅で降りる人が間違って乗らないようにという意味。速くはない。

There is a train line with three stations: Station A, Station B, and Station C.
Both "Local" trains and "Rapid" trains run on this line.
The Local train travels from Station A, stops at Station B, and arrives at Station C.
The Rapid train travels from Station A to Station C without passengers getting on or off at Station B.
However, the Rapid train takes longer than the Local train.
Why is that?

In lateral thinking puzzles, the questioner and the solver engage in a Q&A session.
You get closer to the truth by asking questions that can be answered with "Yes" or "No."

(Q) Does the Rapid train pass through Station B?
(A) It does not pass through Station B.
(Q) So, the Rapid train *does* stop at Station B! Is it for passengers to get on or off?
(A) It is not for passengers to get on or off.
(Q) Does the Rapid train open its doors at Station B? If they do open, is there a platform there?
(A) The doors do not open. Even if they did open, there is no platform there.

I rode a local train while on a business trip to a rural area the other day.
I created this puzzle based on that experience.
Why does it take longer even though it's a "Rapid" train?
Huh? I'm on a Rapid train, but it's moving in a strange way...
I see! Outside the window over there, it must look like this...
Let's make a lateral thinking puzzle out of this!
It's great to enjoy these kinds of unusual experiences. It really stimulates the brain.
You don't necessarily have to go on a trip to experience something out of the ordinary.

(Answer)
The line is single-track.
The Rapid train stops on a passing loop at Station B to let a train coming from the opposite direction pass by.
There is no platform along that passing loop, so the doors do not open.
It is designated as a "Rapid" train because passengers do not board or alight at Station B.
This label is intended to prevent passengers intending to get off at Station B from mistakenly boarding it. It does not actually travel faster.
