<目次>

Unraveling the mystery: "Someone is buying up massive quantities of used Japanese books and exporting them to the US"
"Someone is buying up over 50 tons of used Japanese books and exporting them to the US."
I came across an online article claiming just that.
It seems to be a hot topic.
So, I’d like to introduce the article and try to get to the bottom of this mystery.
You’ll also pick up some useful tidbits about AI and copyright along the way.
Please also take a look at this related article:
A copyright expert explains publishers selling books to AI companies
<Table of Contents>

(2) Buying used books doesn't avoid copyright infringement by AI
(3) Summary: Is training AI this way illegal?
■ (1) Training AI on used books—that’s quite a...
The key points of the online article mentioned above are:
✓ Increased orders are good news for used bookstores
✓ However, if specialized books vanish from the market all at once, researchers and others face difficulties
✓ The actual nature of the transactions should be revealed (it’s for AI training, isn't it?)
In short, the implication is that if it *is* for AI training, that’s outrageous.
I understand the sentiment, but is it really for AI training?
Buying massive amounts of used books just to cut them up for AI training?
✓ That’s a remarkably analog method
✓ 50 tons is a drop in the bucket compared to the total volume of information in the world
✓ Can the AI actually learn properly if the used books have stains or tears?
■ (2) Buying used books doesn't avoid copyright infringement by AI
You could probably treat that online article as being half-speculation or a bit of a sensational story.
That said, it serves as excellent material for learning about copyright.
Here are some insights regarding AI and copyright.
Let’s assume, as in the scenario above, that used books are purchased and used to train an AI.
If the AI then generates content based on that material—that’s a copyright violation! Simply purchasing something does not exempt you from copyright infringement issues when it comes to AI.
Imagine, for instance, that you buy a used novel.
If you were to post its contents online exactly as they are, that would be a violation.
If you were to copy and distribute it, that would also be a violation!
The same principle applies here.
■ (3) Summary: Is AI training illegal?
① As a general rule, AI training is not illegal (it does not constitute copyright infringement).
② There is an exception if it unfairly harms the copyright holder's interests (in which case it does constitute copyright infringement).
"Establishment-aligned" experts also argue for points ① and ②.
In particular, they emphasize that ② is the exception, while ① is the general rule.
I have no objection to this view.
However, the crucial point is not AI *training*, but AI *generation*.
AI generation can constitute copyright infringement (regardless of points ① and ②).
(Perhaps these experts don't explain this because no one asks them about it?)
We will likely continue to see articles about AI appearing in the media.
Does this signify that "the spread of AI is remarkable"?
As for this blog, we will continue to write articles *about* those articles on AI!
