ただ雨が多いことを「疲労」に結び付けるあたりがなんですね^^;

<目次>

How about "Rain Fatigue" for the Buzzword Award? [Predicting the "Kanji of the Year"]

I came across the term "Rain Fatigue" (*tau-hiro*) on a news site.

It is true that Eastern Japan, in particular, experienced a summer with frequent rain and cooler temperatures.

Still, linking heavy rainfall to "fatigue" is a bit of a stretch, isn't it? ^^;

In this article, let's try to learn something from it—rather than just making fun of it!

<Table of Contents>

(1) A kinder world that considers the minority

(2) Will the "Kanji of the Year" be "Rain"? Or perhaps...

(3) Are we giving up on the global warming issue?

■ (1) A kinder world that considers the minority

It is often said that many online articles these days cater to the minority.

For instance, stances like "I oppose the law against desecrating the national flag" don't exactly seem like majority opinions.

It’s a case of the Pareto Principle—where articles aimed at 20% of the audience make up 80% of the content.

You could view this as a kinder world that is considerate of the minority.

Let's not forget that there are people who feel fatigued by excessive rain.

"Rain Fatigue" might actually be a good candidate for this year's Buzzword Award.

■ (2) Will the "Kanji of the Year" be "Rain"? Or perhaps...

Along with the Buzzword Award, there is also the "Kanji of the Year."

A quick search reveals that many people are predicting the character for "Rain."

The rain kept things cool, leading to lower air conditioning bills—though beer sales suffered, among other things.

There’s a lot of talk regarding finances, too, especially given the rising cost of living.

Given the cool summer and the impact on our wallets, the character for "Cold" (*Kan*) might also be appropriate (lol).

If the summer felt cool—like a throwback to the Showa era—perhaps the winter will be bitterly cold, too.

■ (3) Are we giving up on the global warming issue?

This summer was nothing but rain; I hardly saw the character for "Heat" (*Sho*) used at all.

We went to the trouble of officially designating "Extreme Heat Days," yet they never actually came into play.

That raises a question about the issue of global warming.

If we still call it global warming this year, one might start to think, "Well, maybe global warming isn't so bad after all." I think it would be better to classify this year as having a "cool summer"—albeit an exceptional one.

Otherwise, the issue of global warming risks being overshadowed.

Incidentally, the core issue of global warming isn't simply about it being "hot."

Given the heat levels we've seen up until last year, even if global warming were reversed and temperatures dropped by a degree or two, it would still be hot.

I wrote this for those (perhaps a minority?) who are seriously addressing the issue of global warming.

By the way, whether global warming is happening or not, the main thing is being happy, isn't it?

In fact, might global warming actually lead to more happiness? (Intuitively speaking—no need to cite examples from tropical regions.)

Let’s find happiness, even amidst global warming and the weariness caused by heavy rains!
