Does the world get completely shuffled at some moment? [The "Five-Minute Hypothesis"]
Have you ever heard of the "Five-Minute Hypothesis"?
It is a hypothesis based on the idea that the world actually began just five minutes ago—complete with all the information from the past already in place.
In this article, I’ll introduce the "Five-Minute Hypothesis" as a topic for conversation.
Then, let’s try a little mental exercise.
<Table of Contents>
(1) Can the "Five-Minute Hypothesis" be disproven?
(2) Does the world get completely shuffled at some moment?
■ (1) Can the "Five-Minute Hypothesis" be disproven?
The world began five minutes ago?
Everyone would naturally think, "That can't possibly be true."
The "Five-Minute Hypothesis" was proposed by the mathematical logician Bertrand Russell.
Hearing that, one might simply give in and think, "Well, if a famous mathematician said it, it must be correct."
For instance: "This tree has many growth rings, so it must have lived for years!"
"Therefore, the world couldn't have started just five minutes ago!"
But what if the world *began* five minutes ago with that tree already existing exactly as it is?
When put that way, disproving the "Five-Minute Hypothesis" seems difficult.
The "Five-Minute Hypothesis" cannot be disproven, yet its correctness cannot be proven either.
Furthermore, it is said that the hypothesis itself holds no real significance.
However, nothing is absolute.
Since we're on the subject, why not try to disprove the "Five-Minute Hypothesis"?
It makes for a great mental exercise.
■ (2) Does the world get completely shuffled at some moment?
Here is another mental exercise: let's explore an idea similar to the "Five-Minute Hypothesis."
It’s a fun thing to think about.
Actually, I had come up with a similar hypothesis myself. "In a single instant, the world gets completely shuffled!" (★)
✓ The "self" that feels it has lived for years up to this point ceases to exist the very next moment.
✓ You might even find yourself conscious as a completely different person.
✓ Your brain retains the memories of the life you lived up until that point.
✓ If you perform good deeds, you can be reincarnated as a good person.
How does that sound?
There is still so much about the human body and the workings of the universe that science doesn't understand.
It’s fun to come up with hypotheses like this.
Is this (★) concept logically equivalent to the "Five-Minute Hypothesis"?
Even if it is equivalent, that doesn't mean it lacks significance—unlike the "Five-Minute Hypothesis."
✓ It provides motivation to do good deeds.
✓ Doesn't it make death seem a little less frightening?
✓ Even if you're worrying about something right now, it's okay—things will work out.
✓ Let's live this moment to the fullest! Let's enjoy life!
