A Mindset to Stop Worrying About "Work Mistakes" and "Workload"
There is a survey regarding the sources of workplace stress that highlights the following:
Ranked #1: Work mistakes (resulting in financial loss or damage)
Ranked #1 (Tie): Workload
In this article, I will share a mindset that allows you to stop worrying about these issues.
I will touch upon basic knowledge regarding employment as well as broader life philosophies.
I am a patent attorney, but I have also passed the Certified Social Insurance and Labor Consultant exam.
Precisely because I am not currently registered as a labor consultant, I can speak candidly.
I’m here to deliver insights on labor-related topics, combined with fresh ideas!
<Table of Contents>
(1) What does it mean to work for a company?
(2) Give your all to what you can control!
(3) Thoughts on common labor-related topics...
■ (1) What does it mean to work for a company?
What does it actually mean to work for a company as an employee?
✓ It means "doing your best" regarding the tasks assigned to you during working hours.
From this, we can conclude the following:
① As long as you do your best, mistakes or resulting damages are not the employee's responsibility.
② Even if the workload is heavy, you simply need to do your best within the allotted time.
Supplementary note on ①:
Responsibility for the work ultimately lies with your supervisor.
Thinking the responsibility rests entirely on you might be a case of being overly self-conscious.
However, do not forget that the credit for the work's success also belongs to your supervisor.
Complaining that "my boss stole the credit for my work!" is a sure way to be labeled as someone who cannot do the job properly.
Supplementary note on ②:
If the workload is too heavy to finish within the allotted time, the responsibility lies with your supervisor.
You should confirm with your supervisor whether overtime is required; do not decide to work overtime on your own initiative.
Unpaid overtime is strictly prohibited (always check with your boss, even if a mistake caused the delay).
Conversely, if you finish your work early, slacking off for the remaining time is not acceptable.
In this case, doing your "best" means asking your supervisor about the next task.
■ (2) Give your all to what you can control!
The points discussed above apply to many situations in life as well.
In short:
✓ Give your all to the things you can control! ✓ Don't agonize over things beyond your control (Good things come to those who wait)
"Doing your best" at work is something within your control.
On the other hand, work outcomes—whether successes or failures—often depend on luck or the circumstances of business partners.
There are many uncertainties that you simply cannot control.
There is no point in worrying about those aspects.
Incidentally, "interpersonal relationships" ranked third among causes of work-related stress.
The mindset described in point (2) above should be applicable to relationships as well.
■ (3) Regarding workplace and labor-related topics...
Much of the information out there regarding labor and workplace issues is written by business owners or executives.
(Have you ever seen a news article or book on the subject written by a rank-and-file employee?)
It is often worth taking such information with a grain of salt.
That said, nowadays anyone can share information, and you can even consult AI.
Inaccurate or inappropriate information is likely to be filtered out by AI systems.
This blog offers a unique perspective precisely because I am not a registered Labor and Social Security Attorney.
I look forward to continuing to share ideas and insights on labor-related topics!
