Can you trust information from experts? How to distinguish between good and bad experts

There is an endless amount of information out there.

Does "expert information" automatically mean it's trustworthy, while everything else isn't?

As everyone knows, it’s not that simple.

In this article, I’ll explain how to distinguish between good experts and bad ones.

For context, I am a patent attorney who shares information on intellectual property (IP) like patents.

I also share content related to labor and employment matters (I passed the Labor and Social Security Attorney exam but haven't registered).

I’m writing this partly as a reminder to myself as well.

■ How to distinguish between good and bad experts

Here is one way to judge whether information—or the expert providing it—is trustworthy.

■ (1) Trustworthy information (Trustworthy experts)

Sometimes, a topic goes viral in a negative way—an "online firestorm" or *enjo*.

Information that points out specific errors in such a viral discussion is trustworthy.

This is because the primary goal of that information is to clear up public misconceptions.

"Incorrect information is spreading in my field of expertise! I have to do something about it!"

It is only natural for a true expert to feel this way.

I, too, find it hard to stay silent when there’s an online uproar regarding intellectual property (haha).

■ (2) Untrustworthy information (Untrustworthy experts)

On the other hand, information that isn't trustworthy usually has a different primary objective.

For example: promoting a book, popularizing a term they coined themselves, or just trying to make a name for themselves.

Information driven by these motives is often unreliable.

The creators are often in a rush and tend to prioritize traffic numbers over accuracy.

Take labor-related topics, for instance:

"Being a manager is a 'punishment game'," "Revenge resignation," "Overtime cancellation," or "Quiet quitting."

These concepts can contain very risky ideas.

If you swallow them whole without thinking, you could end up ruining your life.

Naturally, I can't help but weigh in on these labor topics on this blog, too (haha).

■ This blog is half hobby, half business promotion

There is nothing wrong with business promotion in itself.

The problem arises when people try to garner undue attention using incorrect information. In this age of AI, trying to force things might actually backfire.

So, what about this blog?

It’s a mix of hobby and business promotion.

Because it’s a hobby, I have a few personal rules for how I run it:

✓ Although I’m a patent attorney, I also write about labor-related topics, psychology, and more.

→ There are things I can write about precisely because I am *not* a registered labor and social security attorney.

✓ I aim to reach a milestone of "10,000 posts" through daily updates.

✓ I make it a rule to write using a "one sentence per line" format (for PC viewing).

✓ Writing every day is good for mental well-being (the benefits of journaling).

I hope that the information proving useful to readers ultimately serves as effective promotion for my business, too...

I hope you’ll continue to drop by and read casually!
