3 Ways to Shift Your Mindset When You’re Unhappy with Work Rules

"Isn't it strange that travel time for business trips doesn't count as working hours?"

I came across this topic online.

It’s natural to feel dissatisfied with certain workplace rules from time to time.

Using this topic as a starting point, I’d like to share some perspectives that can help resolve that frustration.

I am a patent attorney, but I have also passed the Certified Social Insurance and Labor Consultant exam (though I am not currently registered as one).

I’m here to share insights on labor-related matters, along with some fresh ideas!

Please note that this article does not cover practices that are inherently illegal.

Examples include unpaid overtime ("service overtime") or denying overtime pay to middle managers (so-called "nominal managers").

Those issues should be resolved through the Labor Standards Inspection Office or the legal system.

<Table of Contents>

(1) You should have checked the details of the "promise" (employment contract)

(2) A change in conditions doesn't necessarily mean an improvement

(3) Consider changing jobs with a positive mindset

■ (1) You should have checked the details of the "promise" (employment contract)

Let’s start by looking at things from a perspective of personal responsibility.

When making a financial agreement with a friend, you would carefully check the terms, right?

If you didn't check properly, the fault would lie with the person who failed to do so.

Working for a company essentially means making a promise (an employment contract) with them.

You really should have verified the details of that promise at the start.

If you entered into that "promise" without checking thoroughly, then it’s a situation you have to accept.

■ (2) A change in conditions doesn't necessarily mean an improvement

Let’s imagine the company rules changed regarding the topic mentioned earlier.

Suppose travel time for business trips started counting as working hours and became paid time.

However, the company might lower your base salary to compensate for that cost.

They might also eliminate other employee benefits.

What looks like an immediate gain often turns out to be a disadvantage in the long run.

■ (3) Consider changing jobs with a positive mindset

Points (1) and (2) above are ways of thinking that help you come to terms with the situation—or perhaps just accept it.

That said, very few people read their employment contracts from cover to cover before taking a job.

And, realistically, working conditions like those in point (2) rarely change.

If you simply cannot accept the company's rules... In situations like that, try taking a positive approach by considering a career change.

You’re dissatisfied with your company, yet you can’t simply quit—that’s a tough spot to be in.

You don’t necessarily have to go through with changing jobs.

The important thing is to be prepared so that you *could* switch jobs if the need arose.

This brings peace of mind and might even give you some leverage when negotiating with your employer.

So, what can you do to achieve this?

Focus your energy on the things you can control!

I’ll continue to share ideas and insights regarding workplace matters!
