Two Japanese Virtues That Allow Us to Find Happiness Even Amidst Negative News
Exchanging a "It's hot today, isn't it?" with a café staff member.
Adding "Please take care of yourself in this heat" to the end of an email.
It is a season where such small interactions bring happiness.
On the other hand, summer news is filled with headlines about "extreme heat," "record-high temperatures," "typhoons," and "sudden torrential downpours."
Right now, for instance, reports are highlighting record-high temperatures in Kumamoto.
People are voicing reactions like, "This is abnormal!" "It's the end of the world!" or "It's terrible!"
It has long been said that the news is negative, but has it reached a whole new level?
Yet, according to reliable surveys, over 80% of Japanese people consider themselves happy!
Why are we happy despite the abundance of negative news?
The reason seems to lie in those conversations mentioned at the beginning.
It relates to two specific virtues held by the Japanese people.
<Continued below>
Two Japanese Virtues That Allow Us to Find Happiness Even Amidst Negative News
■ Two Japanese Virtues That Allow Us to Find Happiness Even Amidst Negative News
The two Japanese virtues discussed in this article are "humility" and "empathy."
For example, many people are saying that this summer is relatively short and cool.
Even so, if someone greets you by saying, "It's hot, isn't it?" you reply, "It certainly is."
You wouldn't say, "Actually, the heat this summer isn't a big deal."
You prioritize empathizing with the other person over stating the facts.
And it is safer to frame the comment in a slightly negative way (acknowledging the heat).
Whether or not you call this "humility," it certainly involves adopting a modest, unassuming stance.
News programs are filled with stories about accidents, crimes, and disasters.
These, too, are topics that invite empathy or a humble response—acknowledging the severity of the situation.
It is also often said that there is a lot of news that paints Japan in a bad light.
Some even joke, "Are there secret agents working inside the media?" (Haha)
You could also view this as a form of humility toward the rest of the world.
Admittedly, the news is negative. It might even be harsh or shocking at times. (Haha)
But let's consider that, thanks to this, we have cultivated the virtues of "humility" and "empathy."
After all, we live in an information society. There is plenty of information out there—even stemming from negative news—that can make you feel happy.
If you let the news make you feel negative, young people might find that disappointing!
