<目次>

How to handle the "cut overtime" directive when staff reductions make operations unsustainable
Staff cuts mean operations can't function without maxing out overtime!
The feeling of despair when management says, "Please cut down on overtime!"
I came across a news article that felt like something straight out of the Showa era (lol).
I’m going to use this topic for today’s post.
Don't be the kind of incompetent worker who despairs over a situation like this!
I am a patent attorney, but I have also passed the Labor and Social Security Attorney exam.
Although I am not officially registered as a Labor and Social Security Attorney, that very fact allows me to speak candidly about the subject.
I’m sharing some ideas regarding labor management issues!
<Table of Contents>
(1) What troubles customers most isn't operations stalling, but...
(2) Responsibility lies with management, not the front line. However...
(3) Being prepared to quit at any time puts you on equal footing...
■ (1) What troubles customers most isn't operations stalling, but operations forced to run unsustainably!
Faced with the choice between "keeping operations running" and "reducing overtime" mentioned earlier—which should you choose?
You should choose "reducing overtime" without hesitation!
You might think customers will be inconvenienced if operations don't run smoothly.
However, "reduce overtime" is a direct work order. You must comply with it.
Besides, customers are actually more troubled by operations being forced to run unsustainably.
It makes them feel like they are being treated carelessly, and they don't want to see people working under forced, unreasonable conditions.
■ (2) Responsibility lies with management, not the front line. But the results belong to them, too!
Won't a failure to keep operations running mean no results are achieved?
That responsibility lies with management, not the front-line staff.
Since management is the one saying "reduce overtime," results take a back seat.
However, because management bears the responsibility, the results belong to them as well.
Complaining that "my boss took credit for the results" is something only an incompetent worker would say.
■ (3) Being prepared to quit at any time puts you on equal footing!
The fundamental solution in this scenario is to communicate clearly with management.
Explain that reducing overtime will cause operations to stall.
You might even propose increasing staff numbers.
You need the courage to say these things. Also, be prepared to quit if the situation demands it.
Only then can you stand on equal footing with your superiors.
What did you think?
Topics related to labor issues often come with underlying agendas or misunderstandings.
I plan to continue writing about labor-related matters, adding my own unique insights along the way!
