Why Do People Who Pursue Patents Succeed in Business? [Revised Edition]
Someone who achieved success at a young age once said this:
✔ People who fail to succeed lack the courage to be the first to do something no one else has done!
The courage to be the first to do something no one else has done!
That is likely a shortcut to success in life.
"Life" might be too grand a word, but it certainly holds true for business.
■ Why do people who pursue patents succeed in business?
An invention eligible for a patent is one that has never existed before.
Inventions can take the form of products, services, or business models.
In any case, it involves doing something—something no one else has done—"first."
People who pursue patents conduct their business with this mindset.
When you are the first to do something no one else has done:
✔ If you succeed, you gain the "first-mover advantage."
✔ Even if you don't succeed, it becomes an experience—a stepping stone to the next stage.
→ You can even view it as a great story to tell!
In reality, even those who have already succeeded have experienced numerous failures.
The "one win, nine losses" philosophy of Uniqlo’s Mr. Yanai is well known.
If even Mr. Yanai faces that reality,
it is surely difficult for the rest of us to succeed without experiencing failure.
I am convinced that those who pursue patents are the type of people who succeed not only in business but in life as well!
They possess that kind of mindset.
■ Our firm also took a leap of courage!
I’m not sure if this counts as a success story or a failure story, but here is an example from our own patent firm.
Shortly after opening, in 2014, we positioned ourselves as a "patent firm specializing in individual inventors."
At the time:
✓ There were patent firms that explicitly stated they did not accept individual clients (or "walk-ins").
✓ There were no patent firms specializing in individual clients.
I couldn't find any patent firms specializing in individuals online.
If anyone knows of one, please let me know, and I will feature it on this blog.
It wasn't done just to be unconventional or grab attention.
We started it simply because it was the kind of work we wanted to do.
That said, catering to individual clients is, in a sense, extremely challenging. (Please see this article for details on this point.)
Thanks to everyone's support, I have since received many requests from individual inventors.
I have also received inquiries from company presidents and corporate clients.
✔ "If you can handle difficult tasks, surely you can handle other types of work as well."
Hearing those words was unexpected, but it made me very happy.
I believe I have lived up to those expectations.
■ What does it mean to "live a life that makes your soul rejoice"?
I, too, left my position as a national civil servant (a patent examiner at the Japan Patent Office) to strike out on my own.
Whether that was the right move or not... well, I am still running at full speed to ensure it turns out well.
It is also a way for me to regain the practical patent expertise I had stepped away from during my time as an examiner.
Just recently, someone said this to me:
✔ "Let's live a life that makes our souls rejoice!"
People still ask me why I left my job as a national civil servant.
The simple answer is that I just wanted to try my hand at various things.
In the end, I feel I am now drawing closer to that "life that makes the soul rejoice."
I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me!
