Shouldn't we be more concerned about heavy rain than typhoons? [A Scientist's Way of Thinking]

Today, let's explore "a scientist's way of thinking."

In short, it means "formulating a hypothesis and verifying it."

It also leads to thinking for yourself rather than blindly accepting information.

That was a rather stiff opening, wasn't it?

Let me explain "formulating and verifying a hypothesis" using a concrete example.

Let's look at the usual weather news and think things through!

■ Shouldn't we be more concerned about heavy rain than typhoons?

Let's consider the trends regarding typhoons in Tokyo this year.

<Weather News> → <Reality> → <Damage>

① June: Double typhoons → Steady, light rain → No damage

② August: No typhoon forecast → Heavy rain in Chiba → Damage occurred

③ September: Typhoon → Heavy rain in Kanto → Damage occurred

How should we interpret this?

Could it be that heavy rain—not the typhoon itself—is the factor linked to the damage?

We can formulate a "hypothesis" like that.

Once you have a hypothesis, all you have to do is verify it.

This hypothesis doesn't mean we should downplay typhoons.

Rather, the point is that we need to be cautious of heavy rain, even when there isn't a typhoon.

We really should have been on guard during the heavy rain in Chiba (case ②), in particular.

Many people likely assumed it was just another exaggerated forecast.

Weather news often gets treated like the "Boy Who Cried Wolf."

Come to think of it, Typhoon No. 26—which caused such a fuss—ended up going elsewhere.

In fact, the weather was so good that a streak of consecutive rainy days actually came to an end!

It really is best not to take information at face value. ■ The Scientific Mindset

In connection with the above, adopting a scientific mindset allows you to:

✓ Formulate and test hypotheses to turn vague, unsettled thoughts into concrete understanding

✓ Strengthen your mental resilience by articulating those vague thoughts (the journaling effect)

✓ Gain insights into different facets of the world

✓ Share your own ideas with others

✓ Broaden your perspective by observing how scientists communicate their work to the world
