<目次>

What kind of drawings should be included in a patent application? [Rewritten version]
(Q) In addition to the "specification," "drawings" are also attached to patent application documents.
The specification explains things in words, and the drawings explain things in diagrams.
Please tell me about the relationship between the two.
In particular, what kind of content should the drawings contain?
(A) First, try explaining using only the specification.
However, I think there are some things that are easier to explain with drawings.
I recommend using drawings that are necessary and sufficient for such content.
<Explanation>
The specification is more important than drawings.
Drawings are merely to support the explanation of the specification.
In this respect, a "picture storytelling show" is an easy way to understand it.
Why not try creating your patent documents with the image of a picture storytelling show in mind?
<Table of Contents>
(1) Why the specification is more important than drawings
(2) Do you not need to explain things in words because you have drawings?
(3) Patent application documents are like a picture-story show
■(1) Why specifications are more important than drawings
The reason why specifications are more important than drawings is a bit technical.
It will take a long time to explain, so I will keep it brief rather than precise.
The reason specifications are more important is:
✔The patent rights (claims) are expressed in words
In other words,
✔Words (wording/expression) are more important than diagrams (lines/photos, etc.)
During patent procedures, the description of claims may be amended.
Amendments based on drawings are more difficult than amendments based on specifications.
■(2) Do I need to explain in words because there are drawings?
In extreme cases, patent application documents (specifications) should be written so that the contents can be understood "even without drawings."
However, there may be some content that is easier to explain with drawings.
Therefore, drawings are allowed to be attached to patent application documents as an auxiliary.
Let's be aware of the role of drawings in this way.
This will help you create better application documents.
"Because there are drawings, there is no need to explain in words."
It helps to eliminate such a simplistic idea.
"If you move the configuration in Figure 1 as shown in Figure 2, it will become as shown in Figure 3..."
Patent application documents should not be written like this.
■ (3) Patent application documents are like picture-story shows
Patent application documents are just like picture-story shows.
Picture-story shows have a proper story.
You can understand the story just by listening.
However, pictures are used in places where they are easier to understand.
This is done with the listener in mind.
It would be good to think of patent documents in the same way.
(Reader: Everyone in the world, especially patent examiners)
■ What did you think?
The above may not apply depending on the technical field, etc.
It's good to keep this in mind as a matter of awareness.
By the way, this blog also basically explains things using only text.
Sometimes it's easier to understand if you use pictures. We will improve this in the future.
When you visit our office, we will explain things as clearly as possible.
